There are some horror movies that are made for streaming, some that probably deserve a proper Blu-ray, and then there are the completely fucking bizarre little films that somehow feel like they were always supposed to end up on a battered VHS tape.
2 Girls 1 Gut is very much in that last category.
The 2024 Japanese gore short, directed by Guy, has now received a physical VHS release through Luciferian Pictures, giving this extremely short piece of splatter horror the sort of physical-media treatment that feels oddly appropriate.
And because apparently having two women with their intestines tied together wasn’t quite enough, the release also comes with an exclusive random art print.
Two Girls, One Very Bad Situation
The premise doesn’t exactly waste any time explaining what you’re getting here – two women wake up in a completely white room with their stomachs cut open and their intestines tied together, leaving them to take part in what can only be described as a particularly disgusting tug-of-war.
2 Girls 1 Gut runs for only around five minutes, so this isn’t some sprawling Japanese gore movie with a complicated mythology or an hour of characters wandering around a haunted building wondering what that noise was – it’s a very simple setup designed to get straight to the nasty stuff.
The short stars Uonome Gajiro and Natsuki, with Guy directing, and apparently began life as a test shoot for a potential future feature-length project, and I, for one, would certainly be interested to know what the filmmakers originally had in mind for a feature built around this particular concept.
The physical release comes from Luciferian Pictures, which is offering the short on VHS rather than simply leaving it as some obscure digital horror title that disappears into the internet, and this is exactly the sort of release that makes physical media interesting to me.
You can watch practically anything these days, but actually owning a strange little piece of underground horror is a different thing entirely, and there’s also an extra included with the release that makes each copy slightly more interesting – every tape comes with a random art print.
So you’re not necessarily getting exactly the same little package as somebody else.
Luciferian Pictures Knows Its Audience
The release is particularly appropriate coming from Luciferian Pictures, because this isn’t exactly the sort of horror where you’re expecting a giant studio to suddenly announce a collector’s edition – this is underground gore and splatter territory.
And VHS has developed a strange second life within that scene, as the format that was once considered obsolete has become part of the aesthetic again, particularly for filmmakers and labels working with extreme horror, exploitation, practical gore and deliberately nasty little movies.
You could argue that this release is maybe completely unnecessary, but I’d argue that’s probably the point.
The VHS Release Is Out Now
The Luciferian Pictures VHS release of 2 Girls 1 Gut was released on July 25, 2026, with the cassette including the short film and a random bonus art print.
It’s certainly not going to be for everyone, and if the idea of watching two people engage in a tug-of-war using their own intestines sounds like your idea of a terrible evening, I completely understand, but for fans of obscure Japanese gore, this is exactly the kind of strange physical release that catches my attention.
There are thousands of horror films sitting on streaming services that you’ll watch once and probably never think about again, and then there are things like 2 Girls 1 Gut, which somehow end up as a VHS tape with a random art print.
I’m going with the tape.
