Tenement, the Cambodian supernatural horror film from directors Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea, is getting a new Dark Sky Films Blu-ray release later this month – the Blu-ray is currently listed for September 29, 2026, although some retailers are describing the release window more cautiously as late September/early October, but either way, this is the release to look out for if you missed the film when it made its way through festivals and later received its North American release.
There was also a limited edition slipcover designed by Haunt Love, but that version was restricted to just 500 copies and has already sold out, but the standard Blu-ray is still available and contains the same disc content, so unless you’re particularly bothered about having the limited packaging, you’re not missing anything film-related by going with the regular edition.
A Cambodian Horror Film With Japanese Roots
Tenement is an interesting one because it isn’t simply a Cambodian horror movie using a familiar haunted-building setup – the film centres on Soriya, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist who travels from Japan to Cambodia with her boyfriend Daichi following the death of her mother, where she returns to the apartment where her mother once lived and reconnects with relatives she barely knows, only to discover that the building and the people living in it have a much darker history.
That combination of Cambodia and Japan is reflected in the film’s production and language mix too, because the Blu-ray lists Khmer, Japanese and English audio, with DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 tracks, while the film runs for 88 minutes and is presented in a 2.00:1 aspect ratio.
Tenement had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2024, followed by appearances at festivals including the Osaka Asian Film Festival, Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and Malaysia International Film Festival before its Cambodian theatrical release in November 2024.
It was also selected as Cambodia’s official submission for the 98th Academy Awards, which gives some idea of how significant the film was within the country’s recent push to get more of its cinema seen internationally.
The standard edition includes a video interview with actress Thorn Thanet, behind-the-scenes material with Yoshihiko Hosoda and Thorn Thanet, an interview with cinematographer Jeremiah Overman, plus an interview with co-writers and co-directors Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea – English subtitles are also included, and the release is Region A, so that’s worth remembering for anyone outside North America who is thinking about importing it.
The 500-copy slipcover is gone, but the standard Dark Sky Blu-ray remains the version to look for, with the release currently scheduled for September 29, 2026, and you can order the disc here.
