This Week in Asian Horror: New Releases – September 28 to October 4, 2026

Another busy week for Asian horror brings new theatrical releases across Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Taiwan, Vietnam – there are also several regional releases this week, including Indonesian and Japanese films getting new cinema runs elsewhere in Asia.

As always I am counting re-releases in new countries for the first time, in particular, Malaysia is getting quite a few.

Thailand – Death Whisperer: Saming the Werebeast (Quỷ Ăn Tạng 4: Hổ Tinh)

The latest entry in Thailand’s horror Death Whisperer series takes the story in a different direction, sending Yak into a dangerous jungle search for a missing intelligence unit, where he joins Sergeant Paphan as they head into the forest and encounter the Saming, a supernatural tiger-like creature capable of taking different forms and hunting humans. (The trailer below mentions the Vietnam early screening and official release dates)

Philippines – Never After Dark

Dave Boyle’s Never After Dark receives a new Philippine theatrical release this week after opening in Japan earlier in the year – Airi is called to an isolated country house where she encounters a supernatural presence unlike anything she has dealt with before, and as she investigates the history of the house, the situation becomes increasingly dangerous and she discovers that the threat isn’t necessarily coming from the supernatural.

Cambodia – Cerita Lila

Release date: October 1, 2026

Indonesian horror film Cerita Lila gets a new Cambodian theatrical release on October 1, which centres on Nia, who moves into a house with her mother and befriends the spirit of a young girl named Lila, who is searching for her missing twin sister, Lili.

Cambodia – Home 79

Release date: October 1, 2026
Country: Cambodia
Genre: Horror

Home 79 is one of the smaller Cambodian horror releases arriving this week, where current Cambodian cinema listings have it scheduled to begin screening on October 1, and has limited information available that I could find.

Indonesia – Warga Rusun 609

Release date: October 1, 2026
Country: Indonesia
Genre: Comedy Horror

Warga Rusun 609 is a new Indonesian comedy horror about Arka, whose relationship with Bunga, played by Ranty Maria, ends tragically after Bunga dies, where her spirit returns to apartment room 609 and refuses to leave until Arka fulfils a final promise – the film receives its main Indonesian theatrical release on October 1, although advance screenings have been held in 22 cities on September 26–27.

Malaysia – The Resident

Release date: October 1, 2026

Genre: Horror

Thai horror movie The Resident gets its Malaysian theatrical release on October 1, where the film’s horror develops around a wealthy resident and a mansion that becomes the target of a planned robbery, with the would-be thieves discovering that the house contains dangers they weren’t expecting.

Malaysia – Setan Alas!

Release date: October 1, 2026
Country: Indonesia
Genre: Horror / Black Comedy

Setan Alas! also gets a Malaysian theatrical release this week, which follows a group of university students who spend a weekend at an old villa, only for one of them to be mysteriously murdered, so the survivors head into the surrounding forest looking for help, but supernatural forces appear to have closed off their escape.

Malaysia – Munafik: Melawan Iblis

Release date: October 1, 2026

Genre: Supernatural Horror

Munafik: Melawan Iblis is the latest Indonesian entry in the Munafik horror franchise – directed by Guntur Soeharjanto, the film stars Arya Saloka, Acha Septriasa and Dimas Aditya.

Malaysia – Memburu Pemangsa

Release date: October 1, 2026
Country: Indonesia
Genre: Horror / Crime / Thriller

Memburu Pemangsa gets a Malaysian theatrical release on October 1 after its Indonesian cinema release in September – the film stars Laura Basuki, Prilly Latuconsina and Yasamin Jasem and follows four journalists investigating a predatory figure connected to a series of disturbing disappearances, where their investigation leads them towards a much darker supernatural mystery.

Vietnam – Quỷ Dắt Tay / Hold to Death: Hand in Hand

Release date: October 2, 2026
Country: Taiwan
Genre: Supernatural Horror

Taiwanese horror movie Hold to Death: Hand in Hand, released in Vietnam as Quỷ Dắt Tay, arrives on October 2, about a a class reunion, where during the gathering, the group plays a ritual game intended to communicate with ghosts, only to discover that the game has placed a curse on them.

Taiwan – App the Horror

Release date: October 2, 2026

Genre: Horror Anthology

South Korean horror anthology App the Horror also gets a new Taiwanese theatrical release on October 2, which consists of interconnected stories surrounding an app called “Young,” developed by high school students to detect ghosts, and after the students use the app at a forbidden location, spirits that had been sealed away are awakened.

Vietnam – Án Mạng Karaoke

Release date: October 2, 2026
Country: Vietnam
Genre: Horror

Vietnamese horror Án Mạng Karaoke centres on a woman obsessed with karaoke who becomes the victim of a murder at an isolated mountain homestay.

India – Pisasu 2

Release date: Tentatively listed around October 2, 2026
Country: India
Genre: Horror / Drama

Mysskin’s long-delayed Tamil horror sequel Pisasu 2 is currently being tentatively listed for around October 2, 2026, but Indian horror seems to have a habit of moving/delaying release dates at the last minute, and this film has gone through a long series of delays since production, so the October 2 date should be treated as tentative rather than a firmly locked theatrical date.

I also couldn’t find a recent trailer, and don’t want to post the really old ones in case the film has changed a bit since.
