Hope’s New Posters Give Us Our Best Look Yet at Na Hong-jin’s Alien Creatures

I’ve been keeping an eye on Hope for a while now because there are a few things about this movie that make it very difficult to work out what we’re actually going to get.

For starters, you’ve got Na Hong-jin, the director of The Wailing, making what appears to be a science-fiction horror thriller about strange creatures appearing in a remote part of South Korea, and then you’ve got a cast that includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender.

And yet the marketing has been surprisingly careful about showing us some of those people.

Now, a new batch of character posters from South Korea has given us a much better look at the creatures in Hope, and they may also have given away something important about the international cast.

The new posters are particularly interesting because each of the main human characters has been paired with a different creature, and at first, you could look at these posters and simply think that the filmmakers are showing us which monsters each character will encounter.

But there may be more to it than that – the posters place the humans and creatures together, but they aren’t necessarily looking at each other. They seem to exist in the same space without understanding one another.

The basic idea seems to be that something unknown arrives, humans don’t understand it, fear takes over and people start making decisions based on what they think the creatures are rather than what they actually are.

That misunderstanding then gets worse.

And if you’ve seen The Wailing, you’ll know why that makes me more interested in Hope rather than less.

Na Hong-jin has already shown that he’s very good at taking a situation where you think you understand what’s happening and then making you question almost everything about it.

I wouldn’t expect Hope to be a simple alien movie where a creature arrives and everyone spends two hours trying to kill it.

Hope had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has already made a strong impression in South Korea, and it is also heading to the Toronto International Film Festival, while US audiences will get the chance to see it in cinemas when NEON releases it on September 9, 2026.

The new posters don’t give away the whole story, but they do give us our clearest look yet at the creatures, and tthe bigger question is what these creatures actually want.

If they’re simply monsters, then fine – there’s still plenty of potential for a nasty creature horror movie here, but if they’re intelligent beings with their own reasons for being there, though, Hope could be something much more interesting.

About The Author

I am a fan of movies in general and watch quite a few every week, but my love for Asian horror started in the 90’s during the J-horror boom – you know the ones – and ever since then I’ve been hooked on discovering horror from across Asia, from the classics everyone knows to the hidden gems that deserve a much bigger audience.

On this site I explore Asian horror movies from across Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Malaysia, and beyond, since the big entertainment sites tend to focus only on the biggest releases.
