Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) Gets a New 4K Restoration Trailer

Some horror films age badly as we all know, but I have to say, Ju-On: The Grudge really hasn’t, and you can now watch it in 4K, as a new 4K restoration trailer has just been released, giving everybody another look at Kayako, Toshio and that house – and, annoyingly, it still looks like the sort of place you would rather burn down than actually investigate.

And considering how many times this film has been released over the years, the fact that people are still getting excited about another version probably tells you something.

A New Look at a Very Old Nightmare

The new trailer is promoting the 4K restoration of the 2002 film, rather than some new sequel or remake, so don’t go looking for a secret Ju-On 2026 hiding behind the announcement, as this is all about making the original look better – Ju-On: The Grudge is also a film that has always benefited from looking grimy, dark and uncomfortable. Cleaning everything up into a pristine 4K image could easily have made it lose some of that nasty atmosphere.

Thankfully, the footage shown so far still looks like Ju-On rather than some glossy modern horror remake, and Toshio is still one of those horror characters you really don’t want appearing in the corner of your television at three in the morning.

Takashi Shimizu Was Still Figuring Out How Much He Could Get Away With

An interesting fact about Ju-On is that the 2002 film wasn’t actually where the whole thing began – Shimizu had already made Ju-On: The Curse and Ju-On: The Curse 2 as V-Cinema releases in 2000, and those earlier films established the mythology and storytelling approach that would eventually become the much bigger The Grudge franchise – the 2002 movie took that idea and turned it into something much more internationally accessible, and it also caught the attention of Sam Raimi, who later brought Shimizu over to direct the American The Grudge remake in 2004, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Arrow Already Knows There Is a Market for This

This isn’t Arrow Video’s first trip to the cursed house either, because the company previously released a five-disc Ju-On: The Grudge Collection containing the two original V-Cinema films, Ju-On: The Grudge, Ju-On: The Grudge 2, and the White Ghost / Black Ghost double feature, along with a new 4K restoration of Ju-On: The Grudge.

The latest release is therefore very much aimed at people who already know exactly what they’re buying, and apparently there are enough of those people to keep putting Kayako back into increasingly expensive boxes.
