This Week in Asian Horror: New Releases August 31–September 6, 2026

Here are this weeks Asian horror cinema releases that I could find.

As usual, I’m including any new theatrical releases, limited releases, and re-releases in a new country – if I have missed any at time of posting, you can leave a comment, as no doubt I have! (Hopefully not, though).

Indonesia – Munafik: Melawan Iblis

Release date: September 3, 2026

Indonesian horror has a pretty big release this week with Munafik: Melawan Iblis, which arrives in cinemas on September 3, and the film is an Indonesian remake of the Malaysian horror movie Munafik, with Guntur Soeharjanto directing and Arya Saloka, Acha Septriasa and Dimas Aditya among the cast, following Adam, a religious teacher and ruqyah practitioner who has stopped performing exorcisms following the death of his wife, where he eventually becomes involved with Fitri, a nurse whose family is experiencing a series of supernatural disturbances.

Indonesia – Autopsy: Dead Body Can Talk

Genre: Horror

Autopsy: Dead Body Can Talk takes Indonesia into the rather unpleasant world of forensic pathology, which is probably not the worst place to start if you’re trying to make dead bodies creepy, where the film is inspired by the real-life work of Indonesian forensic pathologist Dr. Sumy Hastry, and stars Masayu Anastasia – this film is classified as a mystery thriller with supernatural elements, so not straight horror, but I will include it as it has some horror elements it seems.

Malaysia – Cerita Lila

Release date: September 3, 2026
Original country: Indonesia
Genre: Supernatural Horror

Cerita Lila is an Indonesian supernatural horror film directed by Bobby Prasetyo, and although it has already been released in Indonesia, it gets a new theatrical release in Malaysia on September 3.

Japan – Hot Spring Shark 2: Great Kyushu Showdown

Release date: September 4, 2026
Original country: Japan
Genre: Horror Comedy / Creature Feature

Japan gives us Hot Spring Shark 2: Great Kyushu Showdown this week, which is exactly the sort of title that doesn’t need much explaining before you start wondering what the hell someone was thinking, where the film once again mixes creature feature horror with comedy, rather than pretending it is going to be the next Jaws.

Cambodia – Devil Cave

Release date: September 4, 2026
Original country: Cambodia
Genre: Horror

Devil Cave takes place around a mysterious cave where the characters apparently encounter some supernatural forces, turning what should probably have been a perfectly sensible decision to stay out of the creepy cave into the usual horror-movie disaster.

I can’t seem to find a trailer for this one, but it’s been confirmed for release in a few different places, including this RSB Cinema Facebook post.

Cambodia – Ma Xo: Forbidden Ritual

Release date: August 31
Original country: Vietnam
Genre: Folk Horror

Ma Xo, internationally known as Maxo: Forbidden Ritual, is a Vietnamese folk-horror film that is getting a release in Cambodia this week, where the film deals with an ancient supernatural force and the consequences of performing a forbidden ritual.

I am seeing a few different release dates with this one too, but Legend cinema lists August 31, so will go with that.

Vietnam – Hope

Release date: September 4, 2026
Original country: South Korea
Genre: Creature Feature / Science-Fiction Horror

Hope is the big South Korean creature feature action horror movie that is arriving in Vietnamese cinemas this week, directed by Na Hong-jin.

Vietnam – Ghost in the Cell

Release date: September 4, 2026
Original country: Indonesia
Genre: Horror / Comedy

Ghost in the Cell is Joko Anwar‘s latest horror film, combining supernatural horror with comedy and takes its central setting into the world of prisons, where a ghost becomes connected to a series of increasingly strange and disturbing events.

Cambodia – The Caged Butterfly

Release date: September 3, 2026
Original country: China
Genre: Horror

Chinese horror film The Caged Butterfly (蝴蝶楼·惊魂 / Hu die lou: Jing hun) gets a Cambodian t release this week, with Prime Cineplex listing the 91-minute film for September 3 under the Cambodian title បណ្ដាសាមេអំបៅខ្មោច – directed by Hao Han, the film stars Li Meng, Liu Siwei and Jiang Zhuojun, and is set around the mysterious Butterfly Mansion, a supposedly haunted property where a series of disturbing supernatural events begin to expose the dark secrets of the family connected to the house.
