Japanese mockumentary horror fans who missed Housou Kinshi: Boku no 3-nin no Tsuma (Banned from Broadcast: My Three Wives) in cinemas will soon have another chance to get their hands on the latest entry in one of Japan’s most intriguing fake-documentary franchises, because the movie is officially getting a Blu-ray and DVD release in Japan on September 30, 2026, following its theatrical run earlier this year, and both versions are currently listed for release, with the Blu-ray priced at ¥5,148 and the standard DVD at ¥3,476 through Rakuten Books.
The Return of Housou Kinshi
Directed and written by Toshikazu Nagae, Banned from Broadcast: My Three Wives marks the return of the long-running Housou Kinshi franchise after an 12-year gap since the previous theatrical movie, Housou Kinshi: Wake Ari Ningen Shokudou.
The series originally began as a Fuji TV late-night program in 2003, built around the deliberately misleading premise that viewers are watching documentary footage which was completed but ultimately prevented from being broadcast for some mysterious reason, and that format has made Housou Kinshi one of Japan’s early and influential examples of fake documentary horror, where the franchise has produced seven television instalments and three theatrical films.
Alongside creating Housou Kinshi, Nagae also directed and co-wrote Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night and Seeds of Anxiety, while his Shuppan Kinshi and related “Forbidden” novels have sold more than 300,000 copies.
A Husband, Three Wives and a Very Bad Documentary
The new movie centres on a household built around one husband and three wives, with the story using polygamy as the starting point for another deliberately fragmented mystery, where the footage follows web designer Koji Hagiwara, company owner Yuko Nakase, former model Marina Inui, and nurse Kaede Uchino, and something has clearly gone very wrong inside as the documentary eventually turns towards a disturbing question – which of the three wives killed their husband?
The answer, naturally, is supposedly buried somewhere inside the documentary footage that was filmed a year earlier and then banned from broadcast.
Banned from Broadcast: My Three Wives also seems particularly suited to fans who enjoy horror movies that expect the audience to actually pay attention, necause Nagae has specifically encouraged viewers to watch the film closely, warning that there are details hidden around the edges of the image and suggesting that the truth is not necessarily going to be handed over through conventional exposition.
For anyone who prefers physical media, the wait is almost over though.
The Blu-ray and DVD editions of Housou Kinshi: Boku no 3-nin no Tsuma are scheduled to arrive in Japan on September 30, 2026.
