Shozin Fukui’s Rubber’s Lover is getting a new lease of life, with the Japanese filmmaker’s 1996 cyberpunk horror classic set to receive its first-ever 4K UHD release worldwide. The release comes following Fukui’s death in April 2026.
Presented by Lost in Cult with support from Third Window Films, the limited-edition release features a new director-approved 4K restoration created from the original 16mm camera and sound negatives.
Released in 1996, Rubber’s Lover follows a group of underground scientists conducting brutal experiments on human subjects in an attempt to unlock psychic abilities. Using drugs, torture and sensory deprivation, their research pushes its victims to the limits of human endurance, with the scientists eventually turning to increasingly desperate measures as their project faces closure.
Rubber’s Lover sits alongside Fukui’s earlier 964 Pinocchio, and the new two-disc edition includes the feature in 4K UHD (2160p) on the first disc, alongside a new audio commentary by Japanese underground cinema expert Guy. The accompanying Blu-ray presents the film in 2K (1080p) and includes another commentary, a conversation between Fukui and actor Yohta Kawase filmed at a Tokyo retrospective, a new interview with Kawase, and a new interview with editor Kunihiko Ukai.
The limited edition also comes with new artwork, full-height Scanavo packaging and an eight-page booklet. The UHD disc is region-free, while the Blu-ray is Region B.
Pre-orders are available at Lost in Cult.
