The Sacred & The Cursed: Severin Brings Four Joko Anwar Horror Films Together in Huge Blu-ray Collection

Joko Anwar Sacred and the Cursed Blu-ray cover.

Severin Films is releasing a four-disc Joko Anwar Blu-ray box set on November 24, 2026, bringing together four films – Satan’s Slaves (2017), Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion (2022), Impetigore (2019), and Dead Time (2007), the latter also known as Kala – all four are being presented from masters approved by Anwar, with more than 10 hours of special features produced specifically for the collection.

Four Films That Show How Joko Anwar Got Here

The obvious attraction here for me is Satan’s Slaves, which remains one of the films most closely associated with the explosion of Indonesian horror internationally during the last decade, where the film reworked Sisworo Gautama Putra’s 1980 Indonesian horror movie, turning its supernatural and religious themes into something that became a major domestic success and an important title in what has been described as Indonesia’s New Golden Age of Horror.

The sequel, Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion, moves the nightmare somewhere completely different, as rather than returning to the rural setting of the first film, Anwar places the Suwono family inside a decaying Jakarta apartment building, and the result is a sequel that has developed its own reputation rather than simply trying to repeat the original.

Then there’s Impetigore, which is arguably the film that really demonstrates how comfortable Anwar is working with Indonesian folklore, village superstition and some seriously nasty imagery – released in 2019 and which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

And then Severin has made what I think is the smartest inclusion in the entire set – Dead Time, Anwar’s 2007 film also known as Kala, takes the collection back to much earlier in his career, before Satan’s Slaves made him a much more widely recognised name outside Indonesia.

This Is Loaded With Extras

Severin has also gone deep with the supplementary material.

The set includes new director-approved masters for Satan’s Slaves, Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion and Impetigore, while Dead Time receives an Anwar-approved scan, and there are also commentaries, filmmaker interviews, cast interviews, cinematography and music discussions, production material, deleted scenes, trailers and film analyses.

Anwar himself contributes commentaries and dedicated featurettes across the collection, while cinematographer Ical Tanjung and composer Aghi Narottama also feature heavily in the extras, and there is some particularly interesting material for anyone interested in how these films were actually made, including discussions with producers, behind-the-scenes footage, camera tests and interviews with actors such as Ayu Laksmi, Christine Hakim, Asmara Abigail and Faradina Mufti.

The discs are also region-free, with Indonesian audio options and English subtitles. Satan’s Slaves additionally includes English audio options, while the other films retain their Indonesian tracks – You can pre order the Joko Anwar Blu-ray box set here.

About The Author

I am a fan of movies in general and watch quite a few every week, but my love for Asian horror started in the 90’s during the J-horror boom – you know the ones – and ever since then I’ve been hooked on discovering horror from across Asia, from the classics everyone knows to the hidden gems that deserve a much bigger audience.

On this site I explore Asian horror movies from across Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Malaysia, and beyond, since the big entertainment sites tend to focus only on the biggest releases.
